Shift handovers that are read, not just written.
A structured handover takes a few minutes on a phone at the end of a shift. It goes only to staff authorised to support that person, shows at the top of their screen before they start, and records exactly when it was read.
Know that the next shift has the information.
Verbal handovers get forgotten and paper handovers get lost. When something goes wrong, the question is always the same: did the next person know?
With Assure, every handover shows who wrote it, who it was for, when it was sent and when it was acknowledged. Managers see pending handovers at a glance, and the dashboard shows any that are still unread.

The handovers list with acknowledgement status. Sample data from a fictional service.

Read before you start.
When a carer opens Assure at the start of a shift, any handover waiting for them sits at the top of the screen, above everything else. They read it, add a note if they need to, and acknowledge it. The time is recorded automatically.
Handovers are only sent to staff who are authorised to support that person, so information goes to the people who need it and no one else.

How handover records support your evidence
What Assure helps you show when you are asked how information is shared safely between shifts.
| Requirement | What Assure records |
|---|---|
| Regulation 12, safe care and treatment | Risks, medicines and changes passed on to the next carer, with a record that they were read. |
| Regulation 17, good governance | Accurate, complete and contemporaneous records of information shared between shifts. |
| Continuity of care | Who handed over to whom, and when, for every person you support. |
| Confidentiality | Handovers shared only with staff authorised to support that person. |
Common questions
Does a handover replace daily care notes?
No. Daily notes stay in your care records system. The handover is the short, structured summary the next carer needs before they start.
What if the arriving carer does not acknowledge the handover?
It stays pending and shows as unread on the manager's dashboard until it is acknowledged.
Can managers print a handover?
Yes. Any handover can be printed or saved as a PDF, and the handovers report summarises acknowledgement rates for a period.
